The Central Rappahannock Regional Library was pleased to discover that we are rated #4 in the HAPLR Index or Hennen's American Public Library Rating Index. Thomas Hennen notes that the "HAPLR Index is similar to an ACT or SAT score with a theoretical minimum of 1 and a maximum of 1,000. Most libraries scored between 260 and 730, so scores above and below those numbers are remarkable." There are over 9000 public libraries in the U.S. CRRL is included in the category of libraries serving over 250,000 people and less than 500,000 people. Our score is 814. The rankings are based on statistics collected by the federal Institute of Museums and Library Services.

Friends of the Library Booksales

Friends of the CRRL Look for ongoing sales at Porter and Snow branches. They have lobby booksales beginning the first Friday of each month. Headquarters has a selection of items for sale in the lobby on a daily basis. Watch for announcements for book sales at Headquarters in February and April 2009!

Volunteers are needed for restocking, cashiering, and monitoring the larger book sales. If you'd like to help (and get an inside peek at the sale), call Lydia O'Neil at (540)372-1144, x280!

Long-time Friend Publishes Memoir
In August 2008, Taking on the Burden of History: Presuming to Be a United States Marine was published by Xlibris Publishing. The book, written by Dr. George M. Van Sant, is a memoir of his time serving in the United States Marine Corp. Find out more in the newsletter!

Salem is almost there! In late January 2009 you can expect to visit the newly expanded and renovated building and find the same wonderful service that you have always enjoyed—and much more. Read all about it in the newsletter!

Stafford Friends are looking forward to a stunning new library. Construction of a 30,000 square foot facility on Plantation Drive off Warrenton Road is expected to begin in Spring 2009 with an anticipated opening in Summer 2010. Falls Run will combine the traditional elements of library service—large book collections and reference services—with the new trends in public libraries, emphasizing customer service, displays, new media formats, and comfortable browsing and seating areas. From the Director
These are exciting times for the CRRL region! The upcoming expansion of the Salem Church branch and a new branch in Stafford will provide wonderful new public spaces with expanded resources for our increasingly busy and diverse communities.

The library is also reaching out beyond its walls with dynamic outreach programs, partnerships, and a growing online presence. People are visiting the CRRL network at LibraryPoint.org twenty four hours a day to access powerful information databases, browse the catalog, reserve books, view art exhibits, and download audio and e-books.

The library continues to offer the traditional beloved services. Many of our most popular programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library...musical programs, art exhibits, and film screenings. The quiet behind the scenes effort of the Friends—and the famous Friends’ book sales—are responsible for many of the new furnishings, displays, and equipment found throughout the system. Your support is invaluable.

The CRRL Tech Tips staff training program was recently awarded the Outstanding Staff Development, 2007, from the Virginia Public Library Director’s Association. Tech Tips is a 20-minute program presented monthly at all of our branches so that staff can keep current on developing technologies to better serve the public. Our Web sites and staff have won several awards, including 1st Place Writing for the Web and Innovative Internet Applications. Find out more on our Awards page.
